Shoprite rollout new EFT system to Namibia
In early 2008 Shoprite commissioned eCentric Switch to develop a Postilion based switching solution with the objective of ensuring that Shoprite would be able to provide the highest possible level of customer service into the future.
The mandate was simple:
- Protect our investment in legacy equipment therefore implement the system on our existing hardware platform (POS, Pinpad and Store Server)
- Connect to our three acquiring Banks (Absa, FNB and Nedbank) as well as our Staff Card System
- Support all existing legacy applications (Gift Voucher, Prepaid Airtime, Money Transfers, Staff Card, Gift card)
- And the system must be EMV certified and PCI DSS compliant
eCentric Switch worked with the Shoprite team to integrate esocket.pos on the store banking server and connected a CSC supplied Verifone kernel on the SC5000 pinpad integrated with the Retailx Storeline point of sale system.
The implementation includes the Postilion Active Active Switch configuration which allows stores to connect simultaneously to multiple banks via Cape Town and Johannesburg nodes. This configuration allows stores to continue accepting of the customers plastic cards even when a Switch or bank is down.
The development project took twelve months to complete and after a three month pilot the solution was rolled out to the thirty Namibian stores. A number of enhancements have recently been implemented and the system should be stable through the peak 2009 season ready for rollout in 2010.
